Yale Daily News

daily news

The Daily News is a morning tabloid newspaper in New York City. It is the ninth most widely distributed paper in the United States and was founded in 1919 as the first U.S. daily printed in a tabloid format. It is owned by tronc, the publishing operations of the former Tribune Company, and its headquarters are at 4 New York Plaza in Lower Manhattan. The paper is known for its sensational coverage of crime and scandal, lurid photographs, and entertainment and political features. During the early part of its history, it was an editorially independent newspaper that endorsed conservative populism and isolationism in World War II, though in recent years it has exhibited a moderate-to-liberal bias. The News is often contrasted with its right-wing rival, the New York Post.

The Yale Daily News is the nation’s oldest college daily, and it publishes Monday through Friday during the academic year. It serves the Yale and New Haven communities. In addition to the main paper, it publishes a weekly supplement called WKND, and several special issues each year such as the Yale-Harvard Game Day Issue, the Commencement Issue, and the First Year Issue. The News has also published a variety of special editions dedicated to celebrating Yale’s Indigenous, Black, Latine, Asian American and Pacific Islander communities in collaboration with their respective cultural centers. The News is supported financially and editorially by the Yale Alumni Fund. The Yale Daily News Historical Archive was donated to the Yale University Library by an anonymous alumnus in 2021 and consists of over two million pages of print and online news articles dating back to 1919. The archive is fully searchable and can be accessed here. The News is a member of the New England Press Association. Its website receives an average of 8.8 million monthly unique visitors. It is ranked among the top 50 newspapers on the web according to Comscore. In the fall of 2019, an anonymous donor made a significant gift to help the newspaper continue its historic mission to serve the community by establishing The Yale Daily News Endowment for Editorial Excellence. This fund is dedicated to ensuring the future of the newspaper, which has been serving New Haven for over 100 years. It is currently funded through 2024.
