The word entertaiment has come to be associated with fun and lightheartedness, although many entertainments have a serious purpose. Entertainment may be experienced at a personal level – choosing a DVD or video game to entertain yourself, for example – or on a grand scale with music and dance for an audience of thousands. According to Oliver and Barstsch (2010), entertainment is understood objectively, involves communication between text and audience, uses an external stimulus, offers pleasure, requires an audience and takes place in a passive form.
