New Year, New Laws

SAN FRANCISCO — A new year means new laws that will change how we live, work and play. Some of the highlights:

AB 12: No more saving two months rent for a security deposit when you move into an apartment. This law limits landlords to one month’s rent as a security deposit.

SB 76: Cities will be allowed to create temporary Entertainment Zones that will allow existing restaurants and bars to sell alcohol in those areas during a street festival. This will help the economy by attracting visitors to local businesses.

Whenever a bill passes through a committee, the staff writes a written committee report that is attached to the final version of the legislation and gives an explanation of the purpose of each section. These committee reports are used by courts, executive departments and the public as a source of information on the purpose and meaning of each piece of legislation. A complete copy of this bill’s committee report can be found here.
