Law New: Legislative Developments, Notable Court Decisions and Other Items of Interest to the Legal Community

Law new is a biweekly column that highlights noteworthy legislative developments, notable court decisions and other items of interest to the legal community.

Whenever possible, the law new item includes the full text of the bill in its entirety. This helps readers identify the purposes and scope of the legislation and provides context that may be helpful to courts, executive departments and others in understanding the effect of the legislation on current or future law. Also included when available is the committee report on the bill. Committee reports, written by committee staff, provide valuable insights into the legislative process and are a valuable tool for understanding how laws are created.

A statutory summary is provided for bills that are not longer than six pages. The summary gives a brief description of the purpose and scope of the bill, identifies any changes in existing law and sets forth the text of the bill in its original form. The law new item also contains the text of any bills that were repealed and explains why the committee recommended approval of the bill. The law new item also cites any dissenting views of the committee.
