Law New at NYU Law School

Law new describes new laws, legislation and regulations that are passed by Congress or other legislative bodies and become official rules that govern behavior within a society or country. Laws can also refer to court decisions that interpret or apply existing legislation. The term “law” is often used interchangeably with the terms statute and regulation.

The lawmaking branch of the federal government is Congress. Learn more about the process of creating a law, including how bills get introduced and what happens in committees before becoming law. This section includes the Constitution, laws (known as “bills”) passed by the Legislature and codified in the New York State Consolidated Laws, and decisions by courts that interpret these laws. It is organized by subject matter, and you can search for a specific topic or law in particular by using the search box at the top of the page.

State Laws

This area of the website provides access to all of the laws of New York, which have been passed by the New York Legislature and signed into law by the Governor. The laws are arranged in alphabetical order. The State’s constitution is included in its title and can be accessed by clicking on the “Constitution” tab in this section of the website.

The Law of the State of New York consists of the Constitution, laws passed by the State legislature and codified in the Laws of the State of New York, and decisions by the Supreme Court and the Court of Appeals that interpret these laws. The Laws of the State of New York are updated on a daily basis. The State’s Constitution is available in PDF format and can be downloaded by clicking on the “Copy” link.

Federal Laws

This section contains federal law, statutes and court decisions. It is organized by subject matter, and the latest edition is available on the website in PDF format. The Supreme Court’s recent rulings can be found by clicking on the Supreme Court tab in this section of the website.
