The law is a complex field that affects many aspects of daily life. There are rules that govern how you may drive a car, for example, or laws regarding privacy, housing and employment. Many people who study the law become lawyers in order to help make these rules and regulations.
The process of creating new laws involves a series of steps that ensure the voices of constituents are heard and decisions are made by elected representatives, reflecting democratic principles of representation and accountability. Lawmakers debate bills in committee, adding or deleting provisions, to refine them before they reach the full chamber for a vote. This system enables lawmakers to provide informed recommendations on legislation, resulting in better and more effective laws.
After a bill is passed by the Council, it’s sent to the Mayor. He or she can either sign the bill into law, veto it, or take no action at all. If the Mayor vetoes a bill, it’s returned to the Council, which can override his or her veto with a 2/3 vote. Then the bill becomes law, becoming part of the Charter and Administrative Code.
There are two types of property law: real property, which refers to land and all things attached to it, and personal property, which refers to movable objects such as computers, cars or jewelry. Real property laws include property rights, easements, mortgages and land registration systems. Personal property laws include intellectual property, trust law and corporate laws.
