ASCO Daily News for Oncology Education

For more than 130 years, the Yale Daily News has been a primary source of news and debate at Yale. The oldest college daily newspaper in the United States, many of its students and alumni have gone on to prominent careers in journalism and public service, including William F. Buckley, Lan Samantha Chang, John Hersey, Sargent Shriver, Paul Steiger, Garry Trudeau, and Daniel Yergin. The Daily News continues today as one of the nation’s most influential newspapers.

In the mid-20th century, the Daily News had a reputation for sensational headlines and reporting and enjoyed a large market share in New York City. At its peak, the paper sold more than 200,000 copies each day and was known for its aggressive competition with its rival tabloid, the New York Post. By the turn of the 21st century, the Daily News was still one of the country’s top-selling papers, though circulation had declined from its mid-20th-century high point.

The Daily News provides a combination of local stories, news from the Associated Press and wire services, and opinion columns from various authors, including local columnists and those from the nationally syndicated editorial pages of Hearst and McClatchy. It is also the exclusive publisher of Ballotpedia, a database of information about local and regional ballot measures, and it has an extensive calendar of local events.

Each Daily News article contains comprehension and critical thinking questions, found below the article, to help students understand the news story. In addition, “Background” and “Resources” (including video clips, maps, and links) are provided to enhance learning.

ASCO Daily News is a digital and print publication that provides scientific and educational research summaries from oncology conferences to American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) members and oncology health care providers. The News is staffed by a team of full-time journalists who are highly trained in medical and scientific writing. All articles are fully sourced, fact-checked, and edited for sense and clarity.

The News is produced by the ASCO Education and Communications department with support from the ASCO Cancer Foundation. ASCO will sell advertising space in its publications, but such space does not influence editorial content.

A generous gift from a Yale alumnus facilitated the migration of the Yale Daily News Historical Archive to its current platform, expanded the Archive’s holdings from 1996 to present, and will ensure the preservation of the archive. The Yale Daily News is grateful to our anonymous donor.
